Welcome, friends! As we continue our journey through the book of Acts, I wanted to share my sermon notes with you as a resource to reflect on as you revisit the message, or if you’re encountering these truths for the first time. Today, let’s dig deep into the story of John Mark—often remembered in Scripture as a deserter, but more importantly, a portrait of grace and restoration.
1. The Weight of Desertion
Few words sting more than “deserter.” Throughout history—whether in Sparta, the American Civil War, or WWII—desertion has carried with it not only shame, but lifelong consequences. To desert in a critical moment is to leave others bearing the cost of your absence. In the New Testament, John Mark becomes one such figure—branded not only by an act, but by an identity. Yet with God, the story doesn’t end there.
2. Grace: More Than Overlooking
Grace is not pretending our failures don’t exist—it’s God refusing to let them have the final say. Our lives may carry scars, but in Christ, those scars never define us.
3. Who Was Mark?
Mark was a man of immense privilege—financially, socially, and spiritually. He grew up in a wealthy home large enough to host the early church. He had family ties with influential leaders like Barnabas and personally knew the apostles—and likely even Jesus himself. Mark had a front row seat to God’s unfolding story.
But privilege, as Mark’s story reminds us, doesn’t guarantee maturity. He faltered not just once, but multiple times. When fear struck, Mark ran.
4. The Pain of Running
Mark joined Paul and Barnabas as a helper on a crucial missionary journey. He had an important role—likely as the keeper of vital documents, possibly even responsible for what became known as the Gospel of Mark. Yet, at a pivotal moment, he left. Scripture doesn’t say exactly why. Whatever the reason—weakness, fear, discomfort—Paul saw it as desertion.
And Mark’s failure didn’t just impact himself. His absence brought strain and hardship to his ministry partners.
5. Sharp Disagreement: Paul and Barnabas Split
When Paul and Barnabas later planned to revisit the churches, Barnabas wanted to give Mark another chance. Paul refused. The disagreement was explosive—a real, relational fracture at the heart of the early church.
Paul’s concern: Can Mark be trusted again?
Barnabas’s belief: Can Mark change, and should grace define his future?
In God’s providence, their split resulted in two mission teams instead of one. Paul went forward with Silas to more difficult territory; Barnabas took Mark back to more familiar ground—perhaps the training and restoration Mark needed.
6. Restoration Is a Journey
Forgiveness is not the same as reinstitution. Trust and responsibility can take time to rebuild. But through patient discipleship by Barnabas and later Peter—himself a man acquainted with failure—Mark was restored. Mark eventually became not a liability, but an essential co-worker:
With Paul: In Paul’s final letter, facing death, he asks specifically for Mark, calling him “useful to me for ministry.”
With Peter: Mark worked alongside Peter, who called him “my son” and testified that God Himself will restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish us.
7. From Deserter to the Lion
Church tradition holds that Mark, the supposed coward, is forever symbolized in the Church by the lion—the emblem of courage. But the real Lion in Mark’s Gospel is Jesus, the Lion of Judah, whose grace transforms cowards into lions.
8. Application: Grace That Redeems
A few questions to carry into your week:
Where have you failed, and are you tempted to let that failure define you? Remember, God does not tattoo “deserter” on His children.
Has someone been a Barnabas to you—a person who saw what God’s grace could do in you? If so, thank them! Or, perhaps, is it time for you to be a Barnabas for someone else?
Are you tempted to think your worst chapter is your last? Let Mark’s journey remind you: grace redeems and rewrites stories.
The Gospel in one sentence from Mark’s life:
Grace does not pretend failure never happens, but because of Jesus, failure never has the final word.

Understanding the Text
1. Mark’s Story
Read: Acts 15:36-41.
Reflect: Ben Bailie notes, “Mark was one of those who, in essence, had the word deserter tattooed on him. But what we'll see this morning is that grace would not allow that to be the last word written on his life.”
Questions:
What led Paul and Barnabas to disagree so sharply over Mark?
Why do you think desertion is seen as more shameful than other failures, as Ben Bailie described?
2. Grace and Restoration
Discuss: Ben Bailie taught, “Grace does not pretend that our failures don't happen, but grace refuses to let our failures have the last word in our life.”
Questions:
How did Barnabas respond to Mark differently than Paul? What does this teach us about grace and accountability?
Is there a difference between forgiveness and restored trust? How do you see this distinction play out in the story?
3. Spiritual Privilege and Maturity
Ben Bailie: “Spiritual privilege does not guarantee spiritual maturity. A good beginning does not guarantee a faithful finish.”
Questions:
In what ways have you seen privilege (spiritual, social, or material) impact a person’s faith journey, either positively or negatively?
Reflect on your own life: How have your privileges or disadvantages influenced your walk with Christ?
4. God’s Sovereignty in Human Conflict
Quote: “Luke doesn’t say that the quarrel was righteous, but it does mean that God’s sovereignty is greater than the conflict.”
Questions:
How does this story challenge the idea that God only works through harmonious relationships?
Where have you seen God redeem broken situations or relationships, either in Scripture or your life?
Personal Application
1. Where Do You See Yourself?
Do you identify more with Mark (prone to wander), with Paul (cautious, duty-focused), or with Barnabas (grace-giving encourager)?
Is there a “failure” in your life that you fear defines you?
2. Being a Barnabas
Ben Bailie asks, “Is there a Mark in your life right now? Someone whose worst chapter you might’ve mistaken for their final chapter?”
Consider: Is God calling you to extend Barnabas-like encouragement and second chances to someone?
3. Receiving Grace
How can believing that “grace refuses to let our failures have the last word” free you from regret or shame?
In light of Mark’s restoration, where do you need to receive or extend the assurance that God is not finished writing your story?
